The direct-to-customer order management software landscape has had some interesting changes with mergers and acquisitions. For new comers to this Vendor Update you will undoubtedly see some new names and vendors in this space. Escalate Retail is comprised of GERS, Blue Martini and Ecometry whose open system implementations are off and running; MICROS-Retail (formerly Datavantage/ CommercialWare) acquires eOne Group e-commerce suite and releases CWSerenade with a Java frontend and has as a priority to integrate all its products together; Sigma Micro acquires the software rights to QuarkCommerce, enhances the functionality and rebrands as SigmaCommerce. Junction Solutions expands its product offering with the acquisition of POS software ISS Retail and e-commerce on demand The Page.com. Natural Solutions offerings also include solutions for Catalog, Web and Retail.
Because businesses are truly in a multi-channel selling environment there is big push by the vendors to be able to provide software to do so. The ability to manage the different selling channels with different promotions and pricing, keep consolidated information about the buying habits of the customer and manage the inventory across all channels is a necessity. The traditional Direct to Customer vendor landscape is doing this through adapting to newer software development technology, .NET, Visual Basic, SQL and other client server technology that makes integration to acquired software functionality an easier transition. F. Curtis Barry & Company believes that this trend will continue and that more vendors will have to adapt to this seamless handling of a customer between channels to survive.
For those companies looking for the freedom of the overhead of owning and maintaining order management software and hardware there are options for you; Software as a Service (SaaS). Order Motion and Profit Center Software have emerged to provide SaaS for companies to utilize packaged software without the capital investment.
F. Curtis Barry & Company continues to see larger traditional ERP companies, PeopleSoft, SAP, JDA and others continue to enhance their product offering to be able to meet the needs of the three distinct selling channels. They are doing so through acquisition and product development as well but have focused more on e-commerce integration than on the traditional catalog functionality needed by direct marketers.
F. Curtis Barry & Company can help you assess your operational needs as well as assist in selecting and implementing the right system or service to fit those needs.
